George River Solo 2018

Day 3
Start Time: 7/17/2018 1:10 PM
Duration: 3:20
Distance / Total (km): 11.7 / 46.0

I woke up a little after 9:00am, outside the sky was covered in cloud and it looked and felt like it would rain at any moment, I went back to the tent to snooze until noon. It was still overcast but lighter and the water was very calm so it made sense to make a move and hopefully end up somewhere with a camping area more suitable to the Pod. I finished off some lukewarm tea and munched an apple before leaving at 1:10pm. I’d paddled about 1km when I suddenly realized that I remembered emptying my dromedary water bag but NOT packing it in the boat! I turned around and headed back to camp, no sign of it which could mean only one thing…….it WAS in the canoe but buried under other gear!!!! After that waste of half an hour I started out again, around the point, through the gap in a low esker and then northeast of the big island. The water remained calm, a bit of sun appeared and the cloud of bugs followed me. When I reached the east end of the island I made the turn, the wind started to pick up and rain clouds started to move in from the west.

I decided to cut the day short and start looking for a place to camp, hopefully something sheltered. The wind continued to increase, I came to a small point where there was some flat gravel, further inland amongst the trees it was very wet and lumpy, I opted to stay by the water where it was dry but exposed, too exposed to the wind for the Pod so once again I settled for the Marmot. I got set-up just in time to avoid a rain shower and after that passed went outside to make dinner. I was feeling tired even after such a short day, a mug of tea and some chocolate helped keep me awake for a while then it was off to dreamland………
