Bloodvein River Solo 2015

Tuesday July 28 - Day 2

Time: 0 Hours

Distance: 0 km

It had been quite warm all night and very still, I woke up at sunrise, the sky to the north was brilliantly lit in red. Back to sleep for a couple more hours, finally getting up at 9:30. The VA Boys prepared eggs and sausages (with bonus cheese), they had some issues with the eggs, stored too close to the dry ice in the coolers they required some “defrosting”! At noon my companions had loaded up their boats and set off across Artery Lake towards the river, more than an hour later I spotted them coming back up from the south arm of the lake, they had obviously been confused and missed going west to the first rapid.

I lay about for a few hours, I didn`t feel like paddling in the heat, maybe later I would leave or perhaps not. I had a tuna wrap for lunch, made yet another mug of tea and watched the dark clouds start to roll in. Along with the cloud came ever increasing wind. Around 5:00pm a storm passed close by, just a few drops of rain fell but the winds became very strong. Whitecaps started forming on the lake and I rigged some support ropes to my hut. The clouds passed and the sun returned but the winds only intensified. My bug hut which would be my main shelter for this trip had never been fully wind tested, I prepared for an emergency takedown if things got out of hand. For almost an hour the wind howled, I added more ropes and for a time basically held on to the hut to prevent it from blowing away. As evening came the winds diminished somewhat, at least to a safe level where being blown away was no longer a concern. The temperature was falling by a significant amount, down more than 10 degrees from the late afternoon high in the low 30`s, I was actually feeling a bit chilled after going through three days of intense heat! I fell asleep around 11:00pm, still with no plan of action for the next day.
