Day 15

Time: 0 hr

Distance: 0 km (213.2)

I woke at 10:30, I'd peeked outside a few times in the night but then as now there had been no change. The dark skies, the sound of the wind and the intermittent rain continued unabated. I had some tea & oatmeal in bed and then back to sleep until 2:00pm. It gradually became slightly brighter, the sun high above was trying it's best to burn through the cloud. We went for a stroll, did some unrewarding fishing, hung a clothes line and wasted away a bit more of the afternoon with a tuna lunch. At 4:30 I activated a SPOT ok message, we were not going anywhere today. To be here on a sunny bug free day would be glorious, while the bugs are tolerable the cool wind and dampness prevent me from taking an extended exploration along the esker. We sit and stare out the hut's large north facing window, we see a tall spruce tree rocking in the wind, the grey clouds briskly moving from right to left with the greyness of the water in the background. Always present is the sound of waves breaking on the beach - Steve is napping again!

Although we have changed location once it has been a full 48 hours since the "perfect" weather left us. In 2006 we had arrived at Camp 13 (Herne's Drumlin) early in the day and became wind bound there for the balance. The next day had turned really nice and we were off, too bad we don't have the same luck this year. With just a smidgen of good fortune, when the weather does turn we may be able to make it off these lakes. After returning inside I occupied an hour repairing my gloves while Steve did some repairs to a couple of his bags. Around 10:00pm cooked a Harvest Foodworks Mulligan Stew, filling as always. I expect we will have an early night, early for us at least, not much to do when the light gets dim. It will be frustrating if we need to stay another day and it is causing havoc with our schedule in spite of the flexibility we have. We are now 2 full days behind with still more than half the total distance to cover; it's likely we may lose another day further along. Always looming of course are problems with the pick-up, coordinating our arrival at the coast with good weather conditions.
