George River Solo 2018

Day 17
Start Time: 7/31/2018 0:00 PM
Duration: 0:00
Distance / Total (km): 00 / 209.7

I woke up early, just after 8:00am, ordered up a weather forecast on the InReach; it confirmed what I could see, mostly cloudy, slight chance of rain and winds from the north (headwinds). I was not inspired so I snoozed for a couple of hours before moving over to the Pod. Up ahead there are two lakes both 8 to 10km long, my 2010 notes mention a camp on open rock at the north end of Lac Lacasse about (15km) and in 2010 we had camped at the north end of Lac Resolution (28km). While I went through the usual morning routine, I could see that out beyond my lagoon the water was getting choppy, it would be worse out on those open lakes even getting to that first camp where I would likely be limited to the Marmot. It was still early enough to leave but the wind was clearly intensifying so I made the decision, I will stay put and cover the 28km section tomorrow.

I had a semi-proper lunch today, tuna wrap, some big hunks of cheese with an apple, nuts, fig bars, chocolate and copious amounts of tea. The sky had cleared a bit, it made it seem like a nice day to be travelling but mixed sun and cloud usually creates crazy wind patterns and not of the helpful kind. In spite of having a good seal the bugs seemed to be getting into the Pod at an alarming rate, it was fine as long as I burnt coils, that would be ok except I had discovered a few days ago that of the two boxes I had brought one only had half (4) what I thought it did. Coil rationing was required.

At 4:30pm I went back to the Marmot along with my on the water clothing for tomorrow, It was comfortable there, without rain I could open up the fly for ventilation. The wind began to die off, as frequently happens there was 2 – 3 hours of relative calm leading up to sunset. I decided to skip dinner and sleep early; I sealed up for the night and lay back, the sound of waves lapping on the beach returned as well as the intense sound of the nightly cloud of bugs at dusk. In the distance, I thought I could hear running water, couldn’t be a rapid, they were several km away, maybe a creek or just some run off (turned out to be a little creek incoming on river left about 500m away).
