George River Solo 2018

Day 10
Start Time: 7/24/2018 11:50 AM
Duration: 3:29
Distance / Total (km): 11.4 / 139.9

I woke around 8:00am, the sky outside was cloud covered, I was actually comfortable in spite of the lumpy ground so I went back to sleep for a couple of hours. Eventually got up, packed and dragged my way out of the swamp just before noon. I was on the water for only a few minutes before a light rain began, it would continue on and off (mostly on) all day. The shore was more of the same for the next 5km, when I came to the remnants of an esker crossing I finally found some sandy flat spots, nice to know although if I had continued in the dark last night I might have paddled right past them. I continued to towards the turn to the next marked campsite, wondering what I might find there, so far the sites were quite variable, from non-existent to passable. Even a good spot here in this flat land would be subject to water levels so with this in mind I was keeping an eye out for a good one being unconcerned about covering any specific distance today.

After the turn northwest I checked a point of high ground, on arrival I found exposed rock, a short climb revealed some small bits of moss but the better areas would require climbing higher. I was not keen on dragging my gear up over slippery rock and moss, hoping for better I continued. At the next point I found an open area of flat gravel and moss, very exposed but plenty of space for both the Pod and tent, it was an easy decision to stop here rather than to paddle on 2km to a site of unknown quality. I set up the Pod, moved in, did a bug kill and lit a coil. After changing into dry clothes, I made tea and munched some snacks. A new weather forecast let me know to expect two days of rain with increasing wind.

During a break in the rain I set up the Marmot next to the Pod, the rain and bugs sent me scurrying back to the Pod. I needed to work on dinner, last night in the swamp I thought I might stop for a big breakfast but due to the rain I went without breakfast and of course last night’s dinner. I really had hardly eaten in the past two days and that had to change. I sat around getting caught up on my notes while making a bag of Veggie Burrito Bowl (Alpine Aire), must remember to never buy this one again, nothing but very plain rice and beans, I ate it all of course as I was starving for calories. Around 9:00pm I moved to the Marmot, best to be in there should the wind get out of hand during the night. I stayed up late listening to tunes, the rain was continuous, and I could hear the Pod flapping, while concerning it was actually reassuring because it meant it had not blown away!
