Bloodvein River Solo 2015

Friday Aug 7 – Day 12

Time: 0 hours 0 minutes

Distance: 0 km

I woke up at noon, grey skies once again and it looked certain to drizzle. I was not quite ready to call a layover day but definitely close. I made the usual “breakfast” and lay about for a few hours. Eventually went and dragged the canoe up from the take-out and over to the top of the steep decent on the downstream side of the island. By mid-afternoon some small patches of blue sky appeared, I went for a tour of the island, there are rocky CIV/V channels on both sides, getting a good view of the right channel was difficult, that side of the island is very steep with thick tree cover. It was turning into a fairly pleasant day but clearly I was going nowhere! Spent some time looking at my maps to see if I could make up some distance tomorrow, if I could swing an early dinner and not stay up too late perhaps I could get going super early in the morning, at least that was the theory.

I started on dinner around 5:00pm; I generally try to avoid freeze-dried miab on a layover day so I created a meal using one of my remaining bell peppers, a handful of cherry tomatoes, some dried onions, assorted dried mushrooms with protein via diced summer sausage. All of the above mixed with basmati rice. Made a bit too much but I managed to stuff myself. After resting for a bit I attended to a few chores, filtering water, clean the dishes (the downside to real food) and generally cleaning up. I had accumulated a fair bit of trash so a burn was in order, there was wood around but it was mostly pretty wet, struggled a bit to get it going, disposed of the burnable crap and then let it die out, keeping it going would require too much effort and besides I’m supposed to be sleeping early.

The sky was a brilliant colour as the sun set out of site behind the opposite bank, bugs should be showing up soon so I went back to the hut to make tea and have a cookie or two. I organized a lunch for tomorrow, checked the batteries in my cameras and got generally ready for a quick getaway in the morning. Through the trees to the northwest I could see a dark sky; the odd flash of distant lightning would catch my eye even though the sky above was perfectly clear. This lightning continued for several hours getting closer and closer, there was no thunder to be heard which was a bit odd. Around 1:00am it started to drizzle, I shuttered the hut briefly while it passed over then back to sleep.
